An quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.5 shook a large portion of Southern California early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The first quake had a 4.5-magnitude at 4:48 a.m. north of Cabazon, which is about 15 miles from Palm Springs.

Two minutes later, a magnitude-3.2 quake occurred in the same area.

The strong jolt was felt as far away as Long Beach, Whittier and San Diego, according to social media and the USGS's Did You Feel It Map.

Residents reported their homes shaking, and being woken from their sleep.

There were no immediate reports of damage, but the temblor was followed by dozens of small aftershocks.

Seismologist Lucy Jones said the epicenter was within a region known as the San Gorgonio Knot, where numerous small faults intersect and the only part of the southern San Andreas Fault that produces smaller quakes.

An early morning quake jolted a wide swath of Southern California awake Tuesday.

On Twitter, users from across Southern California reported being jolted awake.
