Madrid Open: Kyle Edmund beats David Goffin in last 16

  • Kyle Edmund weighs up if clay will work in his favour against Novak Djokovic

For one man who relished the occasion in Madrid, British No. 1 Kyle Edmund-who had previously not taken a set off Djokovic in three meetings-somehow turned the tables and produced a performance of vast quality to inflict more misery on the Serb, winning in three sets 6-3 2-6 6-3 to set up a third round meeting with eighth-seeded Belgian David Goffin. He has gone 48 consecutive sets without defeat, which in itself is an open era record - the previous best being at 36 consecutive sets by Romanian legend Ilie Nastase.

Meanwhile, the 16-time Grand Slam champion expressed delight at the way he has recovered from the hip injury that hampered his performance in Melbourne. The Serb has struggled this year after saying he returned to action too quickly following the lingering right elbow injury.

"Obviously I'm disappointed from losing this match, but I can be happy with the progress of the level of tennis", Djokovic said. It got me through easy games and also got me out of some tricky situations.

Djokovic lost in the third round in Monte Carlo and in the second round in both Miami and Indian Wells.

"One or two points decide really these kind of matches".

"I was looking forward to having these kind of matches, looking to trying to win these kind of matches", Djokovic said.

The victory against Goffin was just his second over top-10 opposition and the manner of the 6-3 6-3 win was seriously impressive, with a little "Let's Go" - Murray's on-court catchphrase - thrown in for good measure at the end of the first set.

The game went into a decider and Edmund showed grit to hold at 0-40 down, at 3-2 in the third set.

Edmund put away a glorious cross-court forehand victor as he broke in the first game of the match, but Djokovic hit straight back with a break to love.

"I just felt good today, felt I was hitting the ball well", Edmund said. I try to always remind myself and be grateful for that.

Wozniacki found herself on the brink of defeat as she trailed 4-2 in the final set, but the Dane roared back to claim the last four games and seal the victory.

The top-ranked Nadal, who improved to 18-1 overall on the season, has won 38 of his last 39 matches on his favored clay.

"There are obvious things that are not working well for me". "It was a very solid match in all aspects". Nadal beat Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4 on the clay to take his winning set streak to 50 and eclipse McEnroe's total which the American achieved on carpet in 1984. The 36-year-old Lopez will be the tournament director in Madrid beginning next year.

"Kyle was just better in the decisive moments, and I was a bit unlucky".
