At one point midway through the afternoon, four players - Uihlein, Bryson DeChambeau, Charl Schwartzel and Aaron Wise - all held a share of the lead, but it was Jason Day - already a victor this season on the PGA Tour and playing the Wells Fargo Championship for the first time since 2012 - who emerged from the crowd thanks to back-to-back birdies at Nos.

Woods picked up six birdies to reach one-under 212 but finished the round on a sour note with a three-putt bogey on 18.

He gained 10.7 strokes on the field with that round, which led to his first PGA TOUR victory.

Woods' round was his first under-par score of the tournament and might have been really low if he had been able to find more form with his putter - the one he feigned ditching in a trash can after he three-putt the final green.

Woods holed a 13-foot birdie putt on his final hole yesterday to guarantee that he'll stick around for the weekend at the Wells Fargo Championship.

"Still don't feel that comfortable with my game, to be honest, " said McIlroy, who celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday and then shot a 5-under-par 66 that included 7 birdies, including four in a row on the back nine.

Woods has made the cut in five of his six prior PGA starts this year, missing only in February at the event he hosts at Riviera near Los Angeles. He also is scheduled to play next week's THE PLAYERS Championship, which he won in both 2001 and 2013.

Birthday boy Rory McIlroy also slipped nine strokes off the pace after he shot 76, his worst score in relation to par in 32 rounds at Quail Hollow, where he has won twice. 14 and 15, then concluded his bogey-free round with three consecutive pars.

In the months leading up to this week's Wells Fargo Championship officials told anyone who would listen that things would be different.

The greens at Quail Hollow have perplexed Woods all week. "I'm close, I'm hitting the ball well enough to contend, to win this golf tournament, but I just haven't made putts". But I'm just taking tomorrow that I've got to try and extend that lead every single time I'm up against someone.

"I feel like it's on the end of my tips, it's right on the end of the tip", Day said, rubbing his fingers.

"The course is set up kind of a little bit easier than it was the first two days, for sure", Uihlein said. I just haven't made anything. "Today I felt way better on the range, and I knew I was going to have a good day".

And despite a mini scare at 18 when his ball sat close to the water hazard left of the fairway, Day took his shoes and socks off to hit a fine recovery shot into the heart of the green and two-putt for a closing par. Save those last two holes, and vintage Tiger Woods carries some stream into the final round.
