The Department of Homeland Security ended the "temporary protected status" for about 57,000 Hondurans. It did the same in November for about 46,000 Haitians.

The Hondurans protected by TPS have been in the United States at least since Hurricane Mitch hit the country in 1998.

The department said Hondurans with temporary protected status will need to re-register for the designation so they can work in the US until the 2020 deadline.

"Since 1999, conditions in Honduras that resulted from the hurricane have notably improved", said a Friday statement from Department of Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Catholic Legal Immigration officials have been urging the Trump administration to grant an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status to Hondurans based on the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Honduran TPS holders will have until January 2020 before their protections expire.

Likewise, and according to the Washington Post, the government of Donald Trump would not be considering the current conditions of the country that "remains one of the most violent countries in the world, and has been involved in political instability since presidential elections previous year whose legitimacy was rejected by the Organization of American States and other worldwide observers".

Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world, according to the United Nations.

A few days before that announcement, the Trump Administration had said that it would end the TPS program for thousands of Nicaraguans.

At the time, the country was headed into a presidential election.

Reuters reports that the Honduras Ambassador to the US, Marlon Tabora, said that these families have lived in the US for 20 years and that re-integrating them into Honduras will not be easy if they decide to return.

Many of the Central Americans apprehended at the border, including families and children, are seeking asylum or other relief in the U.S. The Trump administration is seeking powers from Congress to restrict access to asylum. Almost a quarter of them have mortgages, according to the same report. Now fully blind, he fears returning to Honduras, where his father was shot about 8 years ago.

"This is another shortsighted decision by the Administration, and while I'm extremely disappointed, I've long said Congress has a responsibility to step up and put an end to the anxiety and uncertainty young immigrants brought to our country as children and those contributing to our country under the TPS program face because of these short-term Executive mandates", he said.

Countries are added to the list as circumstances warrant, with renewals of TPS coming usually around every 18 months.

If the Honduran designation is terminated, the Trump administration will have canceled protections for about 315,000 foreign citizens.

The Trump Administration has announced the end of TPS for Hondurans. More than 53,000 US -born children have at least one parent who is a Honduran TPS beneficiary. Sources told CNN that Duke made the decision despite pressure from White House chief of staff and former DHS Secretary John Kelly to terminate it then.
