Trump had said there was "blame on both sides" in the unrest between neo-Nazi groups and counter-protesters.

"We look to our leaders to give us direction, to make moral decisions, and I like to say this is not just something that pertains to the United States of America, this bulls-t is going all over the world ..."

BlackKkKlansman received a standing ovation at its premiere Monday night in the Palais des Festival.

"BlacKkKlansman", based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, a black police officer who infiltrated the Colorado Springs chapter of the KKK, stars John David Washington, son of Denzel, and Adam Driver who plays the white officer who helps him pull off the subterfuge.

The scene in question, a documentary montage of the Charlottesville rally and counterprotest, includes footage of the death of activist Heather Heyer. "And we have to wake up", said Lee.

"I knew that this had to be the coda for the film, but I had to do something first", Lee said. We're not Black, white and brown, it's everybody.

He added, "This film, to me, is a wake-up call because...stuff is happening, and it's topsy-turvy and the fake has been trumpeted as the truth. We all live on this planet".

SPIKE LEE'S latest film, BlacKkKlansman, is already impressing critics at Cannes and now film fans can get in on the hype by watching the film's first trailer. "I know in my heart - I don't what the critics say or anybody else - we are on the right side of history with this film".

"I go to bed every night thinking about it", Lee said, looking genuinely anxious.

The film is set to release on August 10, 2018 and the release will collide with one-year anniversary of the Charlottesville riots which saw one woman die after a vehicle drove into a crowd during a clash between white nationalists and anti-fascist protestors.
