Gina Haspel, President Trump's nominee to become the next Central Intelligence Agency director, sought to withdraw her nomination Friday after some White House officials anxious that her role in the interrogation of terrorist suspects could prevent her confirmation by the Senate, according to four senior US officials.

Passing by reporters Monday afternoon, Ms. Haspel said she's "looking forward" to her hearing Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence committee. The recent declassification of a CIA memorandum regarding Ms. Haspel and her role in the destruction of videotapes of CIA detainee interrogations - an action that was not authorized by the CIA Director, Department of Justice, or White House - makes this request all the more important.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to answer a question last week about Trump's views on using interrogation methods that qualify under global definitions of torture.

Trump tweeted that Haspel "has come under fire because she was too tough on Terrorists".

"Think of that, in these very unsafe times, we have the most qualified person, a woman, who Democrats want OUT because she is too tough on terror", Trump added.

Haspel isn't facing opposition only from Democratic senators, however. Sen.

Nominee to head the CIA, Gina Haspel, centre, sits alongside Secretary of Protection Jim Mattis.

Women are too tough for Democrats. People who understand the authentic Gina Haspel - who worked with her, functioned with her, who helped her confront terrorism, Russian Federation and several different threats to the nation - they almost certainly support.

Haspel feared becoming "the next Ronny Jackson", the White House physician who withdrew his nomination as Veterans Affairs secretary amid questions about alleged misconduct on the job, one official told the Post.

Haspel will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday for her confirmation hearing.

The questions surrounding her nomination are more portentous.

Haspel's function additionally was commended by members of this Obama administration - including former Manager of National Intelligence James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan, also former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morrell.

"Nobody has more respect for women than I do".

Her career has brought her to the United Kingdom twice, where she acted as the chief of the London station. "Those who know the true Gina Haspel - who worked with her, who served with her, who helped her confront terrorism, Russian Federation and countless other threats to our nation - they nearly uniformly support her".

These are very risky times, so choices are restricted.

"Another thing Haspel's nomination has going for it is that she gets along with Trump".
